- Slow paced, nature based hikes open to the public on Fridays.
- These hikes look at wildflowers, plants, trees, birds and animals; anything that catches our eye and looks interesting. We do hike, but we stop to look. We will talk about the history of the area if it is important to where we are.
- Bring plenty of water.
- No pets. No smoking.
- Children under 18 years must be accompanied by a parent.
- Bad weather may change or cancel hike.
Friday Slow Paced Hikes
|Jan 5||4.5 mile loop including Esperero, Rattlesnake, Bluff and Lake trails.||Meet at Sabino Canyon Visitor Center at 8 am.||We will do an easy hike that is a loop of about 4 ½ miles. Hopefully we will have some rain. We will go up the Esperero Trail to Rattlesnake; down Rattlesnake and up the road to the Bluff Trail. Pick up the Lake Trail and end up at the Visitor Center. Let’s get in shape for the new year!|
|Jan 12||David Yetman trail to the old stone Bowen house.||Meet at the Walmart on Speedway and Kolb at 8 am. Enter from Speedway and turn left, look for hikers.||This is a shuttle hike. One car is parked at Camino Del’Este and the hike starts at the Tucson Mountain District trailhead just off of Gate’s Pass. Drivers will be driven to their cars and then return to pick up the other hikers. The hike is a little over 6 miles on easy terrain – no climbing.|
|Jan 19||Hope Camp in the Rincons.||Meet at McDonalds at the northwest corner of Houghton and Broadway at 8 am.||We will hike to Hope Camp which is in the Rincons, but outside of the Saguaro East Drive. This is an easy hike with some moderate climbing. We will see old windmills and ranches.|
|Jan 26||Wildhorse trail in Saguaro East.||We will meet at Walmart at Speedway and Kolb at 8 am.||We will do a 5 mile hike. We will have a snack overlooking waterfalls and rocks with a lovely view of the park. There may be some early flowers, if we get some rain!|
|Feb 2||The scenic Chiricahuas.||Meet at the Walmart at Speedway and Kolb at 7:30 am to carpool.||Bring a dish to share for a potluck after completing the hike. We will hike Echo Loop which takes us down into the hoodoos. This hike is around 4-5 miles. Plan to be gone until 3 - 4 pm.|
|Feb 9||Hike from Tram Stop 9 to east and west forks.||Meet at the Sabino Canyon Visitor Center at 8:30 am.||Purchase tram tickets ($10). We will ride up to stop 9. We will hike to the junction of east and west fork and return, about 5 miles total. This is lovely wilderness area and can be beautiful with wildflowers.|
|Feb 16||Wild Burro Trail in Dove Mountain.||Meet at the Northeast corner of Sunrise and Swan at 7:30 am.||Trail is about 4 miles. This area has lovely vegetation that is very different Sabino Canyon. There may be early wildflowers.|
|Feb 23||Molino Basin to Prison Camp and back.||Meet at McDonalds on Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway at 8 am.||Trail is about 4 miles of moderate difficulty. This is on the Arizona Trail. There is interesting history about Prison Camp (Gordon Hirayabshi) displayed.|
|Mar 2||King’s Canyon to the saddle and return.||Meet at Walmart at Speedway and Kolb at 8 am.||We may see some lovely wildflowers along this trail. This hike is about 5-6 miles long, some climbing.|
|Mar 9||Sutherland Trail to a waterfall.||Meet at the Home Depot on Oracle that is near Catalina State Park at 8 am.||The flowers can be spectacular on this trail which is about 6 miles long on fairly easy terrain.|
|Mar 16||Hike to Sycamore Dam out of Prison Camp.||Meet at McDonalds at the corner of Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway at 8 am.||The hike has spectacular views and is interesting historically during the road building era. The hike is 4 miles with a steep climb out.|
|Mar 23||Loma Verde Trail in Saguaro East.||Meet at Walmart on Speedway and Kolb at 8 am.||The hike is about 4 miles long on easy terrain.|
|Mar 30||Pontatoc Ridge||Meet at Sunrise and Swan at 8 am.||Views are lovely and so are the wildflowers in good years.|
|Apr 6||Babad Do’ag (Frog Mountain) trail.||Meet at McDonalds at Tanque Verde and Cataline Highway at 8 am.||This hike is about 4 miles and is a good climb up in the beginning of the hike. It has lovely views and nice flowers.|
|Apr 13||Upper Butterfly trail to the junction of Crystal Springs.||Meet at McDonalds at Tanque Verde and Cataline Highway at 8 am.||Early spring on the mountain will be lovely – new fern growth and that special new green that adorns our vegetation; the promise of a new cycle. The hike is about 5 miles.|
|Apr 20||Sunset Trail to Marshall Gulch and return.||Meet at McDonalds at Tanque Verde and Cataline Highway at 8 am.||This is a beautiful trail with good views all along. The hike is 4 miles.|
|Apr 27||Meadow Loop – about 2 miles.||Meet at McDonalds at Tanque Verde and Cataline Highway at 8 am.||This is at the top of Mount Lemmon and will be a lovely close to our winter hiking!|
