- Slow paced, nature based hikes open to the public on Fridays.
- These hikes look at wildflowers, plants, trees, birds and animals; anything that catches our eye and looks interesting. We do hike, but we stop to look. We will talk about the history of the area if it is important to where we are.
- Bring plenty of water.
- No pets. No smoking.
- Children under 18 years must be accompanied by a parent.
- Bad weather may change or cancel hike.
Friday Slow Paced Hikes
|Jan 4||Wildhorse||Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the end of Speedway.||This about 4 miles of easy hiking going by the Black Hole, Garwood Dam and some impressive saguaros.|
|Jan 11||Pistol Hill||Meet at Walmart at Speedway and Kolb at 8:00 a.m.||We will hike about 4 miles total, roundtrip to the picnic area of Colossal Cave and return. This is lovely desert hiking in rolling country.|
|Jan 18||Loma Verde||Meet at the Saguaro East Visitor Center at 8:20.||Copper mine, Pink Hill and return. About a 4 mile hike in lovely Saguaro East desert.|
|Jan 25||Field Trip to Fort Bowie||Meet at Walmart at Speedway and Kolb at 7:30 a.m.||This is a 2+ hour drive. We will hike the lower trail in and take the upper with views on the way out for a total of about 4 miles. Bring lunch.|
|Feb 1||Pima Canyon to the riparian area||Meet at 8 am at Sunrise and Swan on the northeast corner. (Bazil’s restaurant)||We will hike through lovely desert into the lush riparian area. There should be water flowing in the creek. We will plan to return to the trail head by noon. Those that want to continue to the dam may do so if they want to. We will cover around 4 miles. |Feb 8||Pontatoc Ridge||Meet at Sunrise and Swan at 8 am at the northeast corner||Lovely desert hiking – rocky trail in places. Nice views when we get up high. We will plan to return to the cars by noon. The hike will be 4 to 6 miles. David E. leads.|
|Feb 15||Lime Kiln Falls||Meet at Broadway and Houghton at 8 am parking away from the theater toward Houghton road.||This is a lovely hike through lush desert to an area that has a dry waterfall – though with the rain we’ve been having perhaps there will be water. The hike is around 4 miles. Edi leads.|
|Feb 22||Picacho Peak||Bring a sack lunch and meet at Walmart at Speedway and Kolb at 7:30 am||This will be a field trip – probably not home until afternoon. State Parks charge an entrance fee of $7.00 per car. We will hike the nature trail to a view point – about 3 miles and then go to the back end of the park and hike a short way on the trail enjoying the wildflowers there. Edi leads.|
|Mar 1||King’s Canyon||Meet at 8 am at Walmart or at the trailhead at 8:45 am.||We will hike to the mine and then return via the wash and the petroglyphs. Flowers should be blooming and be spectacular if we have the right amount of rain. The hike will be about 4 miles. Edi leads|
|Mar 8||Sutherland trail at Catalina State Park||Meet at 8 am at Home Depot on Oracle road. Park near Oracle road.||$7.00 per vehicle with 4 per car. This is the premier trail for wildflowers – taking a cutoff through a beautiful canyon area. We will return to the cars by noon. Charlotte leads.|
|Mar 15||Sweetwater||Meet at Sunrise and Swan at 8 am.||This is the backside of Wasson Peak. We will see lovely flowers on this trail getting back to the cars by noon. We will hike around 4 – 5 miles. Edi leads.|
|Mar 22||Phoneline||Meet at the visitor center at 8 am unless the tram is running. If so, we will take the tram up and hike down. The tram leaves at 9 so gather at 8:30 am.||We will look for flowers along the trail. Views are lovely. Hike is about 5 to 6 miles. We will plan to be back by noon. David D. leads.|
|Mar 29||De Anza trail in Tubac||Meet at 7:30 at Walmart at Speedway and Kolb. Turn into the lot at Speedway and park near the road.||We will hike 4 miles between Tubac and Tumacacori mission using a shuttle. This is a flat trail with some river crossings. We will plan to have lunch at Wisdom’s.|
|Apr 5||Molino Basin to Prison Camp on the Arizona trail.||Meet at McDonalds on Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway at 8 am.||This is a lovely hike at a little higher elevation. The hike is around 4 miles round trip. David D. leads.|
|Apr 12||Bug Springs north to south as shuttle.||Meet at McDonalds on Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway at 8 am.||Very steep the first 1/4 mile or so. Goes through some lovely riparian area. This is a little higher elevation. This hike will be around 4 miles or so. David D. leads.|
|Apr 26||Marshall Gulch/Aspen Loop||Meet at McDonalds on Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway at 8 am.||Lovely 6 mile loop on the top of Mount Lemmon. David D. leads.|
