Description:
Everybody is familiar with the earth—it is our home. But most of us actually know very little about the planet on which we live. This book is intended to present the essentials of geology, the study of the earth, in terms that the general reader will understand.
GEOLOGY MADE SIMPLE will provide the reader with an introduction to the origin, com-position, and structure of the earth. The organization of the book follows that of most introductory courses in geology: Part I deals with Physical Geology and Part II with Historical Geology. Such an arrangement is compatible with the General Geology course as taught in most academic institutions and for this reason the book should serve well as a study aid in courses of this type. It is, moreover, well suited for a refresher course, for adult study groups, or for reference purposes. It has been written in such a way that it lends itself especially well to a self-study course.
This book explains how rocks, minerals, and fossils are classified, how wind, ice, and water have shaped the face of the earth, and how mountains are formed. Also discussed are such interesting geologic phenomena as volcanoes, geysers, earthquakes, and glaciers. In addition, there are chapters on ground water and the practical application of geology.
Students, rock and mineral collectors, and the intelligent layman will find that GEOLOGY MADE SIMPLE will provide them with a good geologic background and a greater appreciation of the planet that man calls home.
