About the Friday hikes:

  • All hikes are and open to the public and will begin at 8:00 a.m. unless otherwise indicated on the schedule.
  • All hikes leave from the specified trailhead unless otherwise indicated.
  • Please bring plenty of water and a snack or lunch for longer hikes.
  • Wear hiking boots or comfortable footwear.
  • No pets. No smoking.
  • Children under 18 years must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Bad weather may change or cancel the hike.
  • Cell phones for emergency only.
  • Higher elevation demands good physical condition! We try to accommodate all levels of hikers.
  • To allow for the warm weather in April, we will be part way up the Catalina Highway for the last three hikes of April. We will meet at the McDonald’s at Tanque Verde and Catalina Highway at 8:00 a.m. and caravan to the trailhead. See details in the schedule below.

Mar 6Sutherland Trail, Catalina State Park (5 miles north of Ina Road on the Tucson-Oracle Highway - 11570 N. Oracle Rd)Meet at 8:00 at the east side of the Home Depot parking lot (10855 N. Oracle Rd, just south of the park entrance) to caravan into the park. Or meet at the trailhead at the east end of the main paved road into the park at 8:30 am. Entrance fee $7 for 1-4 people per car required. Moderate hike approx. 5 miles round trip to waterfall. Elevation gain of approx. 750 feet above the state park. Good wildflowers depending on temperatures and rainfall. Allow 3.5 hours.
Mar 13Tanque Verde Dome (Saguaro National Park East in the Rincon Mts)Meet at the SNP Visitor center at 8:00 am. We drive 1.5 miles from SNP to the Javelina picnic area, where we will start our hike. Bring your pass.This is a 6.5-mile hike along the ridge line, with a 1400 foot elevation gain. We’ll have a splendid view over the valley while we have a leisurely break. Pace will be comfortable for everybody. RAIN will cancel the outing.
Mar 20Ventana Canyon trail to Maiden PoolsMeet at Ventana trailhead at Ventana Resort on Kolb Road at 8:00 am.This is an approx. 5-mile, medium difficulty hike, with an elevation gain of 1000 feet. Allow 3.5 to 4 hours.
Mar 27Milagrosa LoopMeet at McDonald’s at Catalina Hwy. and Tanque Verde at 8:00 am to caravan to the trailhead (short drive).This is a loop, 6.6-mile hike with an elevation gain of 1000 feet. Allow 4 to 5 hours.
Apr 3Hutches PoolThis hike will leave on the 9 am shuttle from the Sabino Canyon Visitor’s Center. Will require purchasing a $12.00 shuttle ticket unless you want to walk the 7.4 miles on the shuttle road, in addition to the 8.2 miles from stop 9. Shuttle tickets can be purchased online ahead of time at http://www.sabinocanyoncrawler.com. This medium difficulty hike has an elevation gain of 800 feet. Allow 6 hours and bring a lunch.
Apr 10Bug SpringsMeet at the McDonald's at Tanque Verde & Catalina Hwy at 8 am and caravan to the trailhead. Hike will start no later than 8:45 am.4.5-mile hike with a 600 foot elevation gain. This is a two-car shuttle beginning at General Hitchcock, mp 12 on the Mt. Lemmon Hwy, ending at the lower trailhead near Prison Camp. We will organize car shuttles before we head up the mountain. Extreme ½ mile uphill climb in the beginning, then the trail levels out into a downhill back to the lower trailhead, where we will shuttle back to the upper trailhead.
Apr 17Guthrie Peak from General Hitchcock trailheadMeet at the McDonald's at Tanque Verde & Catalina Hwy at 8 am and caravan to the trailhead. Hike will start no later than 8:45 am.5.6-mile hike starts at 6000 foot elevation and has an overall gain of 1300 feet. Trail is moderately difficult, with a good climb 20 minutes into it and a rock face scramble 10 minutes before reaching the peak. Good physical condition required.
Apr 24Sycamore ReservoirMeet at the McDonald's at Tanque Verde & Catalina Hwy at 8 am and caravan to the trailhead. Hike will start no later than 8:30 am.The trail starts at the abandoned Federal Prison Camp site 7.2 miles up the Mt Lemmon Hwy. Parking is to the left and right just inside the entrance. This hike will head toward Sycamore Reservoir. Length will be at the discretion of the leader.
