The mountains around Sabino Canyon were formed by multiple forces, including volcanic activity approximately 70 million years ago, intrusion of molten magma 30 million years ago, and Basin and Range faulting 10 million years ago. At the Geology table you will see gneiss (pronounced “nice”)—a banded black and white rock found throughout Sabino Canyon.
The geology table has samples of the five minerals that make up Gneiss (feldspar, quartz, mica, garnet, and magnetite).
